How To Make Your Ceiling Fan a Smart Ceiling Fan

In an increasingly connected world, it’s no wonder that smart home technology continues to expand. From lights to garage doors to appliances and more, the sky's the limit when it comes to what can be connected in your home. Or, perhaps more accurately, the ceiling is the limit with smart ceiling fans

What’s a Smart Ceiling Fan?

So what makes a ceiling fan a “smart  fan?” The definition may vary, but a smart fan can simply be defined as a ceiling fan that can connect to a larger network of smart home technologies or operate via digital means. Where a regular fan can only be turned on and off via wiring to a specific switch or a pull chain attached to the fixture itself, a smart fan can be controlled via remote control, Wi-Fi, and in some cases, Bluetooth.

The Advantages of Pairing Smart Tech With Your Fan

One of the major advantages of investing in smart technology is convenience. Smart fans offer the opportunity to regulate fan usage while you are away from home, set schedules to optimize energy consumption, and simply make your family’s comfort easier to adjust with the simple press of a button.

Smart Fans With Their Own Control Center

Thanks to advancements in smart home technology, the DIY approach to smart ceiling fans is no longer the only option for those interested in digitizing their airflow control. Some models offer their own unique setup and control center that is dedicated to the fan itself. These fans may require their own dedicated app, work from a remote control, or have the ability to integrate with other technologies to create a network of smart home devices all accessible in the palm of your hand.

Connecting Your Smart Ceiling Fan to an Existing Smart Home Hub

While it may require a little more work upfront, there are many ceiling fans at Dan’s Fan City that can be connected via Wi-Fi and the Smart Life App (available for Android and iOS) and thus offer the capability to connect with smart home hubs such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa. After the initial installation and setup for the fan itself, many smart ceiling fans can be connected to your existing hub to make voice activation or predetermined running schedules simpler than ever.

Each WiFii-enabled fan’s individual setup will be unique to the specific model you purchase, but a few simple steps will help guide most smart fan calibration.

  • During initial startup, hold the on/off button (or other described pairing button) within 30 seconds of turning the power on to the fan after it is installed.

  • Wait to ensure the signal is received by the fan before testing the remote control or app.

  • If a test remote run does not work, wait at least 15 minutes before trying again.

  • If you are setting up more than one fan, you must program them one at a time and make sure other fans are powered off before programming the next.

  • In order to access the Smart Life App for your WiFi-enabled fan, your router must be set to 2.4 instead of 5.0.
